"Ianthe" also known as "Princess Royal" is an English air in 4/4 time and G Minor. The parts are played AABB.<br> Simpson, in his volume British Broadside Ballads and Their Music, says this air was originally entitled<br> "Iantha" and was included in the supplemental section called "Tunes of the French Dances" in the third<br> edition of Playford's Dancing Master (c. 1657, No. 28). It can also be found twice in Playford's<br> Apollo's Banquet (1670), first as "Ianythae" and then as "La Princess Royale".<br> The "Princess Royal" title was used for subsequent editions of Playford. This is not the same tune<br> attributed to<br> O'Carolan<br> or the one known as an English<br> contra dance.<br> A different tune called<br> "Iantha"<br> appears in editions 13 through 18 of the Dancing Master.<br> It was also printed in Barlow's Complete Country Dances from Playford's Dancing Master (1985).<br>
