"Ianthe" also known as "Princess Royal" is an English air in 4/4 time and G Minor. The parts are played AABB.
Simpson, in his volume British Broadside Ballads and Their Music, says this air was originally entitled "Iantha" and was included in the supplemental section called "Tunes of the French Dances" in the third edition of Playford's Dancing Master (c. 1657, No. 28). It can also be found twice in Playford's Apollo's Banquet (1670), first as "Ianythae" and then as "La Princess Royale". The "Princess Royal" title was used for subsequent editions of Playford. This is not the same tune attributed to "O'Carolan" or the one known as an English "contra dance". A different tune called "Iantha" appears in editions 13 through 18 of the Dancing Master. It was also printed in Barlow's Complete Country Dances from Playford's Dancing Master (1985). |
