"Sir Festus Burke", also known as “Festus Burke”, "Planxty Sir Festus Burke",
"Sir Festus a Burca" is an Irish air or planxty in cut time and D Major.
The melody, for which no words are extant, was composed by the blind Irish harper
Turlough O'Carolan.
O'Sullivan (1983) notes that Sir Festus Burke was the 5th baronet of Glinsk, County Galway, who succeeded to the title on the death of his father John Burke in 1721 (John Burke was the half-brother of Sir Ulick Burke, for whom O'Carolan composed another piece and a lament). Sir Festus married the eldest daughter of the Earl of Clanricard, Lady Laetitia, in 1708, though the union proved barren, and he died around 1730. The melody was noted by the Irish collector Edward Bunting from the playing of harper Charles Fannin in 1792. It was printed in The Complete Collection of Carolan's Irish Tunes, O'Neill's Music of Ireland: 1850 Melodies and Ossian's The Complete Works of O'Carolan. It was recorded by The Irish Tradition, Brendan Mulvihill, Derek Bell, Shelly Phillips and others. |
