"Mrs. Judge", also known as "Abigail Judge", "Madam Judge", "Maghistreas ini Bhreithamhain"
(plus a coda in 3/4 meter that is sometimes separately titled "Planxty Judge" or
"Plangstigh ini Bhreithamhain") is an
Irish, planxty (A and B parts in 4/4 time, C and D parts in jig time) in E Minor.
The parts are played AABBCCDD.
The two part tune was printed as two separate tunes in Bunting's Ancient Music of Ireland (1809). Beethoven arranged a setting of the first part of the tune, which appears in Thomson's Select Collection of Original Irish Airs, vol. 2 (1816). The title, remarks O'Sullivan (1958) refers to the wife of Thomas Judge of Grangebeg, County Westmeath, whom he married in 1707. O'Carolan also composed a tune for "Thomas Judge". It was printed in Complete Collection of Carolan's Irish Tunes (1984) and O'Suillivan's Carolan: The Life, Times and Music of an Irish Harper (1958). It was recorded by Brendan Mulvihill & Donna Long on The Morning Dew (1993) (rereleased on Celtic Treasure). This is one of the few tunes I know in both 4/4 and 3/4. |
