"Wild Hog in the Woods", also known as "Bangum" or "Old Bangum" is an old time breakdown
known in southwestern Va. and Kentucky in A Dorian (Phillips), D Dorian (Fuzzy Mtn.
String Band played in AEae or GDgd (Taylor Kimble) tunings (fiddle). It has one part.
Alan Jabbour says (regarding some instrumental versions) that the tune is "almost
certainly" an instrumental adaptation of the tune used in the Appalachians for the
ballad "Bangum and the Boar" (Child #18), also known as "Old Bangum".
Most modern ‘revival’ versions, however, seem to be based on the playing of Taylor
Kimble (1892-1979), of Laurel Fork, Virginia. Guthrie Meade (1980) points out the
tune's high part is the same as the tune "The Fiddler's Drunk and the Fun's All Over".
The rhythm is irregular - more suited to a listening piece than a dance.
It was printed in Phillips' Traditional American Fiddle Tunes, vol. 2 (1995).
It was recorded by The Kimble Family on Blue Ridge Barn Dance (1974),
Dan Gellert & Shoofly on Forked Deer (1986),
The Fuzzy Mountain String Band (1972),
The Hoover Uprights on Known by their Reputation (2005),
Cathy Fink on Banjo Haiku; 26 Clawhammer Banjo Tunes (1992) and others.
