"The Rolling Hills of the Border" is a song composed by Scottish songwriter Matt McGinn
(1928 – 1977).
Matt McGinn was a very prolific songwriter and novelist with a political and socialist point of view. This song is an example of a different and lesser-known strand to his work, a simple celebration of the Scottish countryside, set to a sweet tune and with no political point to make. McGinn recorded this on his self-titled album Matt McGinn (1966) and on Matt McGinn Again (1967). The song was also recorded by Pete Seeger, The Weavers, Theodore Bikel, The Corries and The Ian Campbell Folk Group among others. I learned it from the recording by The New Golden Ring on Five Days Singing, Volume I (1971). The version given here is from their singing. Roberts and Barrand sang the parody "The Rolling Mills of New Jersey" on their 1983 album Live at Holsteins!. In one review by Jay Lustig in 2015 he wrote: I won’t say that they obviously don’t know much about New Jersey. I will point out, though, that they seem to have learned their Jersey accent in Queens. |
