"The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" was written by Scottish-born Australian
singer-songwriter Eric Bogle in 1971.
The song evokes the devastation of the Gallipoli Landings that
occurred on April 25, 1915 and incorporates, at its conclusion, the
melody and a few lines of lyrics of the 1895 song "Waltzing Matilda"
by Australian poet Banjo Paterson.
The Gallipoli Campaign was one of the greatest Ottoman victories during the war. It is often considered as marking the birth of national consciousness in Australia and New Zealand and the date of the landing, April 25th, is known as "Anzac Day" which is the most significant commemoration of military casualties and veterans in those two countries, surpassing Remembrance Day (Armistice Day). I sing this acapella and add "waltzing Matilda" with guitar at the end. Also by Eric Bogle in this section: Willie McBride |
