"Soldier Will You Marry Me?" is an English song in which a woman is asking a soldier
to marry her, but he says he cannot as he has no nice clothing to put on (hat, coat,
boots, etc). She decides to give him each item he asks for.
In the last verse, she asks once again for him to marry her, but the soldier, all dressed in the clothes, refuses her once more – he is already married. This tune was popular in Colonial America though it probably originated in England. It appears in the Roud Folk Song Index as #489. |
