"The Saucy Sailor" is an English lyric song in 3/4 time and D mixolydian.
It was collected by Cecil Sharp and published in his Folk Songs from Somerset (1915). The theme of the soldier/sailor being rejected until he shows that he has money shows up in a number of other songs including "The Green Bed" and the Irish song "The Wild Rover". "The Saucy Sailor" was also collected by George Butterworth in Sussex in 1907 and published in the Journal of the Folk Song Society. It is included in the Roud Folk Song Index as #531. It was recorded by Steeleye Span on Below the Salt (1972), Peter Bellamy on Mainly Norfolk (1968), John Roberts on Sea Fever (2007) and others. I learned it from Steeleye Span's CD. |
