"The Green Bed" is a traditional English song.
It was collected from Benjamin Arnold, Easton, Winchester in 1909 by Ralph Vaughan Williams It has also been collected in Warwickshire, Somerset and Devon. It is a reasonably common song in England and Scotland, with versions in the manuscripts of most of the Edwardian collectors and numerous examples also in North America. The earliest known broadside printing is an early 19th century sheet by John Pitts, of London, where the song is entitled "Liverpool Landlady". It was recorded by Peter Bellamy on Fair England's Shore, Martin Carthy on A Selection from The Penguin Book of English Folk Songs and others. This version is from Sharp's English Folk-Songs from the Southern Appalachians. It was collected from Mrs. Jane Gentry in Hot Springs, N. C. on September 12th 1916. It was also printed in Greig's Folk-song of the North-east (1914) and MacKenzie's Ballads and Sea Songs from Nova Scotia. There are some similarities to the Irish song "The Wild Rover" and Steeleye Span's "Saucy Sailor" on their album Below the Salt. |
