"Game of Cards", also known as "All Fours" or "The Game of All Fours" is an English
song using a card game as a metaphor for sex.
Cecil Sharp collected this song in 1908. It was also collected from a number of Romany (Gypsy) singers in the 1960's. It is a transparently erotic piece which was not published in "respectable" literature until 1960 when it appeared in James Reeves's anthology of English traditional verse, The Everlasting Circle. Since it is not explicitly bawdy, I have included it here in the Songs section. It appears in the Roud Folk-Song Index as #232. It was recorded by Maddy Prior and June Tabor on Silly Sisters (1976), Sam Larner (as "All Fours") on Now Is the Time for Fishing (1961) and others. |
