"Blackbirds and Thrushes" is an English love song in G major.
Cecil Sharp obtained this song in Somerset; the Irish musician, Petrie, heard it long before, in 1840. Whether it is English by birth or merely by adoption is known. Variants include "Hares on the Mountain" and "Sally, My Dear". The melody brings to mind "The Housewife's Lament". "Blackbirds and Thrushes" is sometimes attributed to Irishman Samuel Lover (1797-1865) because it is included in his novel Rory O'More. It was recorded by Isla Cameron and Ewan MacColl on English and Scottish Love Songs (1958), Shirley Collins on Sweet England (1959), Niamh Parsons and Amy Papiransky. It was printed in Sharp's One Hundred English Folksongs and appears in the Roud Folksong Collection as #12657. |
