"What was Your Name in the States" is an American song.
A one-stanza version is in Carl Sandburg's American Songbag (1927). It is also in
Lingenfelter & Dwyer's Songs of the American West (1968). I have been unable to trace
any earlier history for this song.
A long version (with additional verses) sung by Debbie Reynolds in the movie How the West Was Won (1962) was written by Johnny Mercer. It was printed in Boni's The Fireside Book of Favorite American Songs (1952), Botkin's A Treasury of American Folklore (1944), Ives' Burl Ives Songbook (1953) and Ives' The Burl Ives Sing-Along Song Book (1963). The second verse is not given in Sandburg's book. |
