"Two Little Lads" is an American narrative song from the Ozarks.
It is a variant of "Jack and Joe" with the ironic twist that in this song both men marry the woman but the original lover, who becomes the second husband, regrets the outcome. Along with "Joe Bowers" it is one of the family of "the girl I left behind" where the girl marries someone else while her lover is away. The transcription is from the singing of Mrs. Pearl Brewer of Pocahontas, Arkansas on November 12, 1958 in the The Max Hunter Folk Song Collection, a joint project of the Missouri State University Department of Music and the Springfield-Greene County Library in Springfield, Missouri, where the permanent collection is housed. Mrs. Brewer's singing is typical of traditional singers. The verses transcribed by Max Hunter as 5 and 6 are actually a chorus and are sung to different melodies. Verses 11 and 12 are similarly a second chorus. Verses 6 and 12, sung to the third section of the melody are a measure short. |
