"The Tree in the Wood", also known as "And The Green Grass Grew All Around" or
"And the Green Leaves Grew All Around", is an Appalachian folk song that was first
noted in 1877 in Miss M. H. Mason's book Nursery Rhymes and Country Songs but is
likely to be much older. Some sources give the author as William Jerome and melody
by Harry Von Tilzer in 1912.
Today it is a popular classic children's song and a good example of a cumulative song. It was recorded by Pete Seeger and Sam Hinton. It appears in the Roud Folk Song Index as #129. It was printed in Peter Blood and Annie Patterson's Rise Up Singing: The Group Singing Songbook, Fred and Irwin Silber's Folksinger’s Wordbook and the Frank C. Brown Collection of North Carolina Folklore, Volume 3: Folk Songs from North Carolina (1952). |
