"Roll in My Sweet Baby's Arms" is an American traditional song. It seems to have
developed from lyrics in the cowboy song "My Lula Gal", itself a development of
bawdy British and Appalachian songs generally known as "Bang Bang Rosie" or
"Bang Away Lulu".
The earliest recorded version is that of Buster Carter and Preston Young, 1931, with Posey Rorer on fiddle. This song has a long history of recording from then to the Monroe Brothers (1936) to Flatt and Scruggs (1951) whose recording made it a favorite with bluegrass bands. It was also recorded by Jimmy Martin, The New Lost City Ramblers, George Jones & Tammy Wynette, Buck Owens, Doc Watson and Willie Nelson among others. |
