"Putting on the Style" is a song which was published in 1870 and the song was popular in the latter part of the 19th century. Vernon Dalhart recorded "Puttin' On the Style" in December 1925 and by 1926 it was a popular hit. The song was collected in the Catskills by Norman Cazden from Ernie Sagar in 1945 showing that it had entered oral tradition. Another version has also been collected from oral tradition in West Virginia. It was recorded by Vernon Dalhart on December 21, 1925 (released on March 1, 1926), Ken Houchins in 1932. Pete Seeger, Erik Darling and The Song Swappers in 1955, The Gateway Singers in 1956, Lonnie Donegan and His Skiffle Group in 1957, The Shanty Boysin 1958, The Chad Mitchell Trioon Mighty Day on Campus (1961), Hillbilly Five in 1964, Grant Rogers in 1970, The Riot Rockers in 1977, Andy Fairweather Low and The Low Riders in 2015 and Pete Seeger on American Favorite Ballads, Vol. 2 (2003). It was printed in Seeger's American Favorite Ballads (1961).
