Lyrics:
I had a dog and his name was Blue
I had a dog and his name was Blue
I had a dog and his name was Blue
Betcha five dollars he's a good 'un too
Chorus
Here Blue, you good dog you
Shouldered my gun and I tooted my horn (3x)
Gonna find a possum in the new ground corn
Chorus
Old Blue barked and I went to see (3x)
Cornered a possum up in a tree
Chorus
Possum come out on a swinging limb (3x)
Blue barked at the possum, possum growled
at him
Chorus
Blue grinned at me and I winked at him (3x)
I shook the possum out an' Blue took him in
Chorus
Baked that possum nice and brown (3x)
And I layed them sweet 'taters round and round
Chorus
Old Blue died and he died so hard (3x)
Shook the ground in my backyard
Chorus
Dug his grave with a silver spade (3x)
Lowered him down with links of chain
Chorus
Every link I did call his name (3x)
Here Blue, you good dog you
Chorus
When I get to heaven first thing I'll do (3x)
Take my horn and blow for Blue
Chorus
Come on Blue, come on Blue (3x)
There's a possum in Heaven for me and you
Chorus
"Old Dog Blue" (also known as "Old Blue") is an old folk song, believed to have
originated from the minstrel shows of the late 19th century. A 1928 version by
Jim Jackson, entitled "Old Dog Blue", it is included in the Anthology of American
Folk Music. It has been recorded by
Joan Baez, The Byrds, Furry Lewis, Guy Carawan, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Cisco Houston,
The Dillards, Bob Gibson and Bob Camp, Sam Hinton, Pete Seeger, Dave Van Ronk,
Ian & Sylvia and many others.
It was printed in The Joan Baez Songbook, Alan Lomax's The Folk Songs of North America
and The Burl Ives Songbook.
I think I first learned it from Burl Ives.
