"The Housewife's Lament" is adapted from the post Civil War diary of Sara Price of Ottawa, Illinois. The lyrics are similar to an Irish song called "The Old Man's Lament". It is printed in Alan Lomax's The Folk Songs of North America. It has been recorded by Peggy Seeger and others.
