"The Virgin Queen", also known as "Riding a Mile", "Cummilum", "Is Cuma Liom", "I Don't Care",<br> "Fairest Put on Awhile", "Mad Moll" or "Yellow Stockings" is an English air in 9/8 time and<br> A Major. The parts are played AAB.<br> The title dates from 1703 when it appeared in the<br> supplement to the 11th edition of Henry Playford's Dancing Master, it was retained through<br> the 18th edition of 1728. The tune, however, had previously been published by Playford as<br> "Mad Moll" in his 1698 edition of that work. Swift wrote a song, called "O My Kitten," to<br> the tune. Philippe Varlet suggests that “The Virgin Queen” is the ancestor of the Irish<br> melody "The Humors of Whiskey" and is related to the double jigs "Langstrom's Pony" and<br> "The Mooncoin Jig”.<br> It was printed in Barlow's Complete Country Dance Tunes from Playford's Dancing Master<br> (1985), Chappell's Popular Music of the Olden Time (1859), Playford's Dancing Master (1702). <br> The version shown here is from Chappell. I have changed the final note from G to A to<br> resolve to the tonic.<br>
