Tunbridge Wells (also known as Royal Tunbridge Wells) and Tonbridge are both towns in Kent, south east of London. The area is known for the large area of nature walkways between Tonbridge and Hastings. Tunbridge-Walks was the most successful play by Thomas Baker (1680-1749), premiered at the Drury Lane Theatre Royal in January 1703. Little is known about Thomas Baker except his plays. Tunbridge-Walks was a very successful play, published in the year it was first performed. It was revived regularly throughout the first half of the 18th century. In the years between its premier in 1703 and the end of Queen Anne’s reign in 1714 it was produced at least twenty six times, putting it on the list of the most popular plays of the period. It was republished seven times in London and Dublin between 1703 and 1764, including two separate London editions in 1736. The tune was published in the 12th edition of Playford's The English Dancing Master (1703) and was continued through the 18th edition (1728). The tune was probably composed to celebrate the production of the play.
