"Touch and Take", also known as "Oaken Leaves" is an English Country Dance
tune in 6/8 time (6/4 time in Playford) and G Major. There is one part repeated.
The tune was originally printed by John Playford in The Dancing Master,
second edition (1652), under the title "Touch and Take" and retained under that
title for editions 3a (1657) and 3b (1665).
Later dance researchers and reconstructionists (such as Cecil Sharp) sometimes
exchanged dance directions for a tune that they preferred instead of the one
Playford printed with the tune. Karpeles & Schofield list this tune as "'Oaken
Leaves' to the tune of 'Touch and Take'".
It was printed in
Barlow's The Complete Country Dance Tunes from Playford's Dancing Master (1985) and
Karpeles & Schofield's A Selection of 100 English Folk Dance Airs (1951).
