A Dorian mode tune in D. The melody was published by Playford in The English Dancing Master from the 1st edition (1651) through the 10th edition (1698). Williamson suggests the title might refer to a nightcap or last drink prior to retiring, otherwise he believes the composer would have referred to the Scottish head-gear as a bonnet.
It was also printed in Karpeles & Schofield's A Selection of 100 English Folk Dance Airs (1951) and Sharp's Country Dance Tunes (1909).
It was recorded by The Telemann Society on The English Country Dancing Master (1959), Robin Williamson on Legacy of the Scottish Harpers (2007) and Hesperus on Early American Roots (1997).
