"Sage Leaf" is an English country dance tune in 6/8 time and G Mixolydian
(A part) and G Major (parts B, C, D, E).
The parts are played AABBCCDDAA (Raven, Sharp), AABBCCDDA'A' (Karpeles) or
AABBCCDDEE (Barlow).
In Karpeles, sections B,C & D are repeated as many times as there are couples
dancing and the dance finishes with an A part repeated.
The melody was first published with directions for a country dance in the 4th edition of John Playford's Dancing Master in 1670. It was retained in the Dancing Master editions through the 18th and final edition of 1728 (published at the time by John Young). It was also printed by rival London publisher John Walsh in his Compleat Country Dancing Master editions of 1718, 1731 and 1754. It was printed in Karpeles's A Selection of 100 English Folk Dance Airs (1951), Raven's English Country Dance Tunes (1984), Sharp's Country Dance Tunes (1909) and John Walsh's Complete Country Dancing Master, Volume the Fourth (1740). It was recorded by The Telemann Society on The English Country Dancing Master, Vol. II. |
