"Petticoat Wag" is an English country jig in G Dorian. The parts are played AABB.
“Petticoat Wag” was published as a longways dance (“for as many as will”) in
John Playford’s first edition (1651) of The English Dancing Master. It appeared
under that title through the third edition of 1665 after which it continued to
appear through the 8th edition (1690) with the expanded title "Petticoat Wag, or
The Taylor’s Daughter" and as "The Taylor’s Daughter" in the 9th and 10th editions.
It was discontinued after the 10th edition.
It was printed in Barlow's Complete Country Dance Tunes from Playford’s Dancing
Master (2005),
Barnes's English Country Dance Tunes, vol. 2 (2005) (appears as “Trip to Greene”) and
Raven's English Country Dance Tunes (1984).
It was recorded by The New York Renaissance Band on Country Capers: Music from
Playford's The English Dancing Master (2008).
