"Hill's Maggot" is an English country dance tune in cut time and C Major. The parts are played AABBCC.
Each part has only six measures.
The melody and dance directions ("Longways for as many as will") were first published by Henry
Playford in the 11th edition of the Dancing Master (1701). It was retained in each
subsequent edition through the 18th and final one, published by John Young in 1728.
"Hill's Maggot" was also published in John Walsh's The Compleat Country Dancing Master
(1718) and in subsequent editions of 1731 and 1754.
There was a dancing master named George Hill of London, whose will was probated on
April 16th, 1706, although whether he is associated with this tune is unknown.
It was also printed in Barlow's Complete Country Dances from Playford's Dancing Master (1985).
