"The Hare's Maggot", also known as "Up with Aily" is an English triple hornpipe in 3/2 time and A Minor. The parts are played AABB. The parts are not symmetric: the A part has 6 measures and the B part has 8 measures.
The melody was first published in the Dancing Master, 11th edition (1701), then published in London by Henry Playford. It was retained in subsequent editions through the 18th and last, printed in London in 1728 by John Young. It also appears in Walsh's Compleat Country Dancing Master, editions of 1718, 1735 and 1749.
It was printed in Barlow's The Complete Country Dances from Playford's Dancing Master (1985), Fleming-Williams & Shaw's English Dance Airs; Popular Selection, Book 1 (1965) and Raven's English Country Dance Tunes (1984).
It was recorded by Kirkpatrick & Hutchings on The Compleat Dancing Master (1974).
