"Draper's Maggot" is an English country dance in 3/4 time and D Major.
The parts are played AABB.
"Draper's Maggot" first appears in Henry Playford's 13th edition of the Dancing Master (1706), then in Walsh's Compleat Dancing Master, vol. 1 (1718). Playford also included a companion tune called "Draper's Gardens". The two tunes together are possibly with the Draper's Guild, then one of the most powerful companies in London. 'Draper' was originally a term for a retailer or wholesaler of cloth that was mainly for clothing. A draper may additionally operate as a cloth merchant or haberdasher. It was printed in Barnes' English Country Dance Tunes (1986), Fleming-Williams & Shaw's English Dance Airs; Popular Selection, Book 1 (1965), Elias Howe's Musician’s Omnibus Nos. 6 & 7 (1880-1882), Raven's English Country Dance Tunes (1984) and Barlow's The Complete Country Dances from Playford's Dancing Master (1985). |
