"The Blue Boar" is an English country dance in 3/2 time and Bb. The parts are played AABB.
I cannot find any background to explain the name, however, there is a building in London dating back to 1404 that had become known as Blue Boar Inn by 1451. The name continued in use into the early 19th century. There are a number Blue Boar inns and taverns in various cities in England. The tune was printed by Henry Playford in Apollo's Banquet 5th Edition (1687) as well as the Playford's publishing house's The Dancing Master, First Supplement to the 7th Edition (1687). It was also printed in Barlow's The Complete Country Dance Tunes from Playford's Dancing Master (1986). |
