"Ode to Whiskey" is an Irish air in 6/8 time and D Major.
The tune is attributed to blind Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738), although Donal O'Sullivan, in his definitive 1958 work on the bard, could find no incontrovertible evidence of its origin. Its only attribution to Carolan was by Dr. Douglas Hyde in Literary History of Ireland but O'Sullivan concedes the melody is "sufficiently typical of Carolan's style to justify its inclusion." The Irish Gaelic lyric and the air was also published in Moffat's Minstrelsy of Ireland (1897).
It was printed in Horncastle's Music of Ireland (1844), Complete Collection of Carolan's Irish Tunes (1984), O'Sullivan's The Life, Times and Music of an Irish Harper (1957).
It was recorded by The Chieftains and by Derek Bell.
