It was probably written around the time of the Civil<br> War.<br> The first known recording in 1927 by old-time musician David Miller. Through the years,<br> this song was sung by many other hillbilly and country artists such as the Monroe<br> Brothers, the Carter Family, The Statler Brothers, the North Carolina Ramblers,<br> the Dixie Reelers, Woody Guthrie, Mississippi John Hirt and Pete Seeger.<br> It was also recorded by Elvis Presley, once on December 4, 1956, during the Sun<br> Session in Memphis, Tennessee and later on as a professional. <br> Woody Guthrie called this song a "church house blues".<br>
