Lyrics:
Chorus:
You've got to walk that lonesome valley
Well you gotta go by yourself
Ain't nobody else gonna go there for you
You gotta go there by yourself
Mother's got to walk that lonesome valley
She's got to walk it by herself
Ain't nobody else could walk it for her
She had to walk it by herself
Chorus
Father's got to walk that lonesome valley
He's got to walk it by himself
Ain't nobody else could walk it for him
He had to walk it by himself
Chorus
Jesus walked that lonesome valley
He had to walk it by himself
Ain't nobody else could walk it for him
He had to walk it by himself
Chorus
"Lonesome Valley", also called “You’ve Got To Walk That Lonesome Valley”, is
considered a white spiritual. It was probably written around the time of the Civil
War.
The first known recording in 1927 by old-time musician David Miller. Through the years,
this song was sung by many other hillbilly and country artists such as the Monroe
Brothers, the Carter Family, The Statler Brothers, the North Carolina Ramblers,
the Dixie Reelers, Woody Guthrie, Mississippi John Hirt and Pete Seeger.
It was also recorded by Elvis Presley, once on December 4, 1956, during the Sun
Session in Memphis, Tennessee and later on as a professional.
Woody Guthrie called this song a "church house blues".
