"Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho" (or "Joshua Fought the Battle of
Jericho" or "Joshua Fit de Battle of Jericho") is a well-known
African-American spiritual.
The song was inspired by the Old Testament tale of the fall of Jericho, from the Book Of Joshua. The Israelite army led by Joshua marched around the city blowing their ram's horn trumpets and after Joshua ordered them to shout, the walls collapsed. The song is believed to have been composed by slaves in the first half of the 19th century. Some references suggest that it was copyrighted by Jay Roberts in 1865. It has been published in five hymnals of various denominations. The first recorded version was by Harrod's Jubilee Singers(1922 or 1924). Later recordings include those by Paul Robeson (1925), Mahalia Jackson (1958), Clara Ward, Hugh Laurie, Pete Seeger and many others. |
