"Melancholy Martin", also known as "Mártan Dubhach" is an English Country<br> Dance or Irish slip-jig tune in 9/8 time and A Major. The parts are<br> played AB (Sharp) or AABB (Karpeles, Kennedy, Levey, O'Neill, Petrie, Raven).<br> Irish versions entered the repertoire through George Petrie's Ancient Music of<br> Ireland (1855).<br> Petrie points out that the provenance is unclear. Irish sources seem to<br> predate English ones, which seem to stem from Cecil Sharp's Country Dance<br> Tunes (1909) and Sharp noted that he had the tune from Petrie.<br> It was printed in P.M. Haverty's One Hundred Irish Airs vol. 1 (1858),<br> Karpeles & Schofield's A Selection of 100 English Folk Dance Airs (1951),<br> Kennedy's Fiddler's Tune-Book: Slip Jigs and Waltzes (1999),<br> Levey's Dance Music of Ireland, 2nd Collection (1873),<br> O'Neill's Music of Ireland (1903),<br> Krassen's O'Neill's Music of Ireland (1976),<br> Petrie's Ancient Music of Ireland (1855),<br> Raven's English Country Dance Tunes (1984) and<br> Sharp's Country Dance Tunes (1909).<br>
