"The Maid of the Mill" is the name of a number of English morris dance tunes in 6/8 time and
G Major or A Major. The parts are played ABB ABB ABB ABB A.
The version collected in the village of Bampton, Oxfordshire is a variation of "The Mulberry
Garden" that was printed in Playford's Dancing Master and was titled "The Maid in the Mill"
from the 10th edition on.
This version is from the village of Bledington in Gloucestershire.
The dance is sometimes begun with the rhyme:
The maid of the mill, the maid of the mill,
She says she won't but we know she will.
It was printed in Bacon's The Morris Ring (1974) and
Mallinson's Mally's Cotswold Morris Book (1988).
