"The Gipsie's Round, also known as "Upon a Summer's Day" is an English country dance tune
in 6/4 time and G Mixolydian. The parts are played AB.
The air appears in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book and is possibly set or composed by
William Byrd. Chappell notes that the melody was known from Elizabethan times and that
round dances were as popular as longways dances at that time. They were as much in favor
at the Elizabethan-era court as at the countryside Maypole.
The spelling "gipsie" is an antique one.
It was printed in Chappell's Popular Music of the Olden Time, vol. 1 (1859).
