"The First of April" is an English Country Dance tune in 6/8 time and A Major. The parts are played AABB. The melody appears to have been first published by the firm of Longman, Lukey & Broderip in Bride's Favourite Collection of 200 Select Country Dances, Cotillons (1776). It also appears in Charles and Samuel Thompson's Compleat Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 4 (1780). It was also printed in Barnes' English Country Dance Tunes (1986), Karpeles & Schofield's A Selection of 100 English Folk Dance Airs (1951), S. Johnson's Twenty-Eight Country Dances as Done at the New Boston Fair, vol. 8 (1988) and Raven's English Country Dance Tunes (1984).
